Even as talking heads hold forth on the state of education in India and the Bachchan baritone plays up the importance of gyan on television,a simple domestic help in a play by Delhis Maitreyi College learns her lesson the hard way. In the play,Akka,Amoli,Anni,Anni works at a house where a series of incidents reveals to her the importance of education. In contrast,the lives of the other characters,Akka and Amoli,show that students have become slaves to mechanical text-book education. Akka,Amoli,Anni is among the plays that will comprise the week-long Best of Collegiate Theatre festival,to be staged at India Habitat Centre from October 12.
The colleges participating in the festival include Ramjas,Hansraj,Lady Shriram,Indraprastha College for Women,Kirori Mal and SGTB Khalsa. Ramjas theatre society,Shunya,will stage their hour-long play titled The Park that will highlight the importance of choices in everyones life. The Players group from Kirori Mal College will present Sadak Paar,based on British playwright Sam Holcrofts Dancing Bears,an exploration of the blurred and often-changing boundaries that separate victims from oppressors. In the play,girls will be seen playing the roles of boy and girl gang members to showcase how gender is no refuge in safeguarding one from violence and exploitation.
The highlight of the festival this year is a scenography workshop on October 23,which will be facilitated by Deepan Sivaraman,a well-known theatre person. Sivaraman will focus primarily on the text that space offers within the linguistics of theatre. The festival will also have Delhi-based playwright Neel Chaudhuri critiquing and analysing the staged productions,on October 20.
