Fans of lyrical Urdu prose are in for a rare treat, since a diverse range of Pakistani and Indian poets have come together to perform at Delhi’s popular Annual Shankar Shad Mushaira. Organised by Shankar Lall Murli Dhar Society, this Mushaira is now in its 46th year and presents contemporary ideas spoken in delicate, evocative verse.

This year, the guest poets from Pakistan are Zehra Nigah,Pirzada Qasim,Salim

Kausar and Azam Behzad. Nigah is the best known,a popular feminist poet from Pakistan who also penned the script for Pinjar— the 2003 feature film based on Amrita Pritam’s novel.

The Indian poets are Javed Akhtar,Bekal Utsahi,Shaharyar,Anwar Jalalpuri, and Miraz Faizabadi among others.

Talking about the current political situation that hampers creative interaction between the two countries, popular Pakistani poet Peerzada Qasim said that fundamentalists can’t quash the creative spirit. “Society is undergoing so many change—the biggest of them being the change in young minds. Poetry facilitates thought,” says Qasim,67,who was born in Delhi and is visiting India after 21 years. The Shankar-Shad Mushaira has been named after two renowned poets of Delhi— late Lala Murli Dhar ‘Shad’ and Sir Shankar Lal ‘Shankar’ and has enjoyed the patronage of former Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.
