DJ Dipyy spins his way to the top in a nationwide DJ contest. Next stop is the international arena in Canada
Joypreet Singh Bindra was a toddler when his parents nicknamed him Dippy. And 26 years later,at Canvas in Phoenix Mills in Mumbai on Friday, this was the name that the audience was chanting. DJ Dippy had just won the India leg of Red Bull Thre3Style,an international DJ contest whose finals will be held in Canada in December.
The contest on Friday, where Dippy was pitted against eight other DJs,was judged by famous American turntablist and composer,DJ Qbert,Indian DJ Nasha and Channel [V VJ Juhi. Dippy played a mix of genres from Get Busy by Sean Paul mixed with bhangra beats to popular Bollywood numbers mixed with hip-hop. I decided to go old school and played a number of songs that the crowd had forgotten. This worked for me, he says.
Dippy is the resident DJ at Kix in Kolkata,a lounge under the Mainland China group, and, like most DJ across India,he relies on Bollywood at events to please the public. But ask him about the genre he relates to the most and he says,EDM. Electronic dance music. His influences are UK-based progressive trance DJ Ashley Wallbridge and popular musician Ned Shepard.
He also moonlights as a visual artist. I am the resident visual artist at the Underground Club in Kolkata. Audio-visual,in which electronic visuals complement the music, connects strongly with the audience, he says. He has time to hone this skill before the trip to Canada, but somethings worrying him: I am to get married in December. I hope the dates dont clash.
