SPG bus driver booked for ‘restraining’ Pak diplomat’s son

A special Protection Group driver was booked for allegedly restraining the son of a Pakistan High Commission diplomat in Chanakyapuri on Wednesday.

A special Protection Group (SPG) driver was booked for allegedly restraining the son of a Pakistan High Commission diplomat in Chanakyapuri on Wednesday. An FIR was lodged on Friday.

The incident took place on Race Course Road,near the Prime Minister’s residence,police sources said. The accused,identified as Sunil Kumar,had come to drop security personnel at 7-Race Course Road (PM’s residence),the sources added.

Sources said SPG bus driver Sunil Kumar had an altercation with Jawad Abbasi,son of Pakistan High Commission diplomat Gulam Abbasi,after a minor collision between their vehicles.

A senior officer from Chanakyapuri police station said: “We got a call at the Police Control Room (PCR) about it on Wednesday. The matter was sorted out after we went to the spot and spoke with both parties. But after the Pakistan High Commission complained to the Ministry of External Affairs,we registered a case against the driver today.”

The officer said the police were asked to act on the complaint by “higher authorities”.

The officer said Abbasi’s car (an official High Commission vehicle) had left the High Commission when Sunil Kumar was driving by,to drop security personnel at the Prime Minister’s residence. According to the officer,there was a minor collision,followed by an altercation between Abbasi and the SPG bus driver. Kumar reportedly blocked the car when it stopped at the next traffic signal. “Kumar,along with a few others,came out of the bus and tried to take away the car keys,” the officer said.

Joint Commissioner (New Delhi range) Dharmendra Kumar confirmed that the incident involved “a Pakistan High Commission diplomat’s relative”.

Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Shankar Dash said a case under Section 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the driver,Sunil Kumar,at Chanakyapuri police station and investigation into the incident is on.

Dash added that this is a bailable offence.

The SPG is the elite unit that handles security of the Prime Minister,the President and other senior political leaders.
