A 40-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two passengers injured when the three-wheeler they were travelling in was hit by a speeding truck,early on Sunday morning. The incident was reported from IP Estate area of Central Delhi.
Police have arrested the errant truck driver and have booked him for rash and negligent driving.
According to police,the incident was reported at 2.25 am at the ITO traffic light.
Police said the auto-driver Jagdish Mehto,a native of Muzaffarpur in Bihar,picked up two passengers Ganga Prasad (20) and Dwarika Singh (26) from East Delhi and was headed towards Shadipur when the incident occurred.
Mehto picked up the two passengers from the Anand Vihar bus terminal and was on way to Shadipur via Vikash Marg. The speeding truck was coming from Sarai Kale Khan and hit the auto from the left. The impact of the collision was such that the auto was dragged for a few metres and was reduced to a mangled heap, said a senior police officer.
The driver and passengers had fallen out of the auto due to the impact,police said.
The auto driver died on the spot, said the officer.
The injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital,where doctors discharged them after preliminary treatment,police said.
The errant truck driver,Anil Yadav,a resident of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh,has been arrested and his truck has been seized.
Police said Mehtos family has been informed and his body has been preserved at the MAMC mortuary. A case has been registered at the IP Estate police station.
