Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on Saturday acknowledged that the Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) is facing “many issues”, even as he assured that the government “will not create new problems but fix the old ones”.

Speaking at the university’s sixth Foundation Day at the Yashobhoomi convention centre in Dwarka, Sood said the government would address the challenges confronting the institution and strengthen its role in making Delhi “India’s skill capital”. He also announced that the government will hold an annual ‘Skill and Entrepreneurship Festival’ to promote innovation.

The university was established in 2020 through the merger of several polytechnic and skill institutes following the DSEU Act, 2019. According to sources in the university, since then, the institution has rapidly expanded but has faced infrastructure, fee-hike and curriculum-related issues, along with concerns among contractual staff over salary disbursements.

Without going into the details of the “problems”, Sood said, “For me, students are first. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta… we will solve every issue concerning every stakeholder.” He added that the DSEU Bill, passed six years ago, was meant to “change the definition of education” by bridging the gap between learning and employability.

“A decade ago, few in India spoke about technical education or self-reliance. When Narendra Modi had not yet taken charge as Prime Minister, there were very few discussions on skill education. In the last 11 years, the skilling ecosystem has become stronger,” he said.

He described DSEU as “a tree whose roots are in Delhi’s soil and whose branches touch the skies of the world”, with what it reaps being for the students.

Sood said the proposed annual festival would serve as a platform for students to showcase their projects with “a focus on innovation and bringing change”.

He also said a core committee will be constituted to address pending issues related to universities and educational institutions in a time-bound manner.

DSEU Vice-Chancellor Ashok Kumar Nagawat, meanwhile, said the university was established to align education with industry needs and empower youth to secure jobs. “Skill development is the most powerful tool for social and economic development,” he said.

He added, “Crafting excellence is our motto. Our mandate is to create an industry-aligned, skill-based education system that empowers youth not only to find jobs but to build careers.”

He said DSEU is the first university in the country to introduce exit options in engineering programmes, allowing students to leave with a certificate, diploma or degree at different stages of study.

DSEU runs on about 19 campuses in Delhi and offers around 60 programmes, including diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It has partnerships with Mercedes, Lenskart, Hitachi, IBM and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), among others.
