Single attempt: CBSE changes rule to clear Class IX

The Central Board of School Education has asked all its affiliated schools to give only “one attempt” to Class IX students who get an EI or E2 grade in the recently concluded exams.

The Central Board of School Education (CBSE) has asked all its affiliated schools to give only “one attempt” to Class IX students who get an EI or E2 grade in the recently concluded exams.

The grading system was introduced in classes IX and X from this academic session and according to the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) Scheme, the practice of declaring ‘compartment’ or ‘fail’ was discontinued.

The CBSE had earlier said candidates who obtain E1 or E2 grade can improve their performance in five subsequent attempts.

A CBSE official said,“Students of Class IX who have obtained E1 or E2 grade in one or more subjects excluding additional subject may be allowed to improve their performance in second summative assessment through subsequent one attempt.” Such students would not be eligible to get admission in Class X till they improve their performance, the official added.

The decision to allow only one attempt for class IX students has been taken keeping in view the “administrative difficulties”.The earlier decision to give five chances to Class X students remains.

The one chance of improvement of performance is to be given preferably within a period of one month from the date of declaration of the results by the schools, the CBSE said.
