The big fat Indian wedding has,over the years,gone on to add another description blingy. Bridal outfits and wedding wear pack in everything from heavy embellishments,rich fabrics and embroideries in vibrant hues. Thats something Kolkata-based designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh has been making mental notes about for a while now. Isnt everyone looking like everyone else? To me,it appears like a sea of over-embellished gota,sequins and more, says the designer,who took a three-year hiatus from wedding wear. Call me old-fashioned,but I miss the freshness and high drama of simplicity in bridal outfits, says Ghosh,who rolled out her Festive/Bridal 2013 collection last week. Looking to make a statement,the collection called Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication presents what can be best described as effortless chic.
Working with free-flowing fabrics such as georgette,chiffon,crepe and jersey,Ghosh has used layering and pleating in a Grecian style. The colour palette is refreshing as Ghosh pairs lime with gold,pink with olive,and rust with gold. A wedding wear collection would be insipid without gold but Ghosh has chosen her tone wisely,preferring one with a dull metallic sheen. The outfits are dramatic in terms of silhouettes and boast of hand embroideries. Her take on the bridal lehenga is a dull red,multilayered and pleated ghagra paired with a half-pleated gold and embroidered sari with a pleated choli.
The designer is also readying with a kidswear line,Little Women,which will offer Indian ethnicwear for newborns to six-year-olds. The line comes out of a need from my own life. It comes from a set of friends who want their kids to be as stylish as they are. Ive found that well-designed kidswear with global silhouettes and Indian aesthetics are scarce and therefore,tried it, says Ghosh,whose signature pleated dresses will now come in pop colours,albeit in mini sizes. The KUG label is also set to dish out an accessories line for women that would include mojri-inspired wedges,conversation clutches,armlets and jewelled combs.
