Shut factory units month before Games: Mayor

Taking cue from Beijing,Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain is now planning to shut down all industrial units in the Capital for a month before the Commonwealth Games next year.

Taking cue from Beijing,Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain is now planning to shut down all industrial units in the Capital for a month before the Commonwealth Games next year. Aiming to provide a pollution-free environment,Sain has decided to write to the Delhi government on the issue.

“The hosting of the Commonwealth Games in the city is a matter of great pride for all residents of Delhi, and so we have requested the state government to shut these units,” Sain said.

He added that the administration needs to identify potential polluters and warn them to keep pollution under control. All such units in Delhi and neighbouring areas like Sahibabad,Ghaziabad and Faridabad will need to be closed at least four weeks before the Games are held.

“The diesel generator sets, numbering in more than 2 lakh in Delhi, can remain out of operation if uninterrupted power supply is assured. It is recommended that a close scrutiny be made as to which polluting industrial units should be warned and which thermal power stations should be shut down.

“It may also be assessed as to which offices can be closed for four weeks without significant interruption in public service. The manpower may be utilised in assisting the organising of the Games,” Sain said.

“As for compensating the workers for missing work,we have suggested that they be allowed to work longer hours after the Games so that they can make up for the monetary loss through overtime pay scales. Moreover,we have also suggested that they be given rebates in their electricity and water bills as well as on various taxes to compensate the loss of wages during that period,” he added.

If an approval is granted by the Delhi government, the Mayor will then invite the heads of all these industrial units to chalk out a plan for shutting the units.
