Seeking Prince Charming

What’s it about? A pampered,protected child,Aaradhaya is “scared of” ugly people. Having associated herself with the land of fairytales from an early age,she also believes that she is a princess who will someday meet her prince charming. Once,during a school play that enacts the story of The Frog Prince,she snubs the boy playing the lead role,Madhav,for being unattractive. This affects Madhav’s self-confidence and he grows up with an inferiority complex. However,his friend Rahul — his good-looking friend — always supports Madhav.

Soon,Aaradhaya starts to fall in love with a popular RJ Ehsaas for his voice,unaware that he is actually Madhav. She joins the radio company as an intern to meet Ehsaas. The story then explores the equation among the three characters as they deal with insecurities and love. The story is essentially being pitched as an adaptation of The Beauty and The Beast. It has,however,brought in a third character,a parallel lead in the form of Rahul.

Who’s in it? After playing Navyaa in a show by the same name on Star Plus,Soumya Seth returns as Aaradhaya. Her act as a naive,effervescent young girl stays — perhaps the reason the makers got her on board. Abhishek Malik,Rishi Shekhawat of Chhal – Sheh aur Maat,has joined the show as Madhav’s good-looking friend Rahul. The “unattractive” protagonist is played by Rohit Khurana.

What’s hot? The show addresses one of the biggest and largely unaddressed social issues — of judging a person based on appearance. It is a bias one witnesses everyday in various forms,but is often passed off as a joke. The character of the hero is interesting too,which is that of an RJ who hides his complexes behind his voice.

What’s not? The idea of a girl with prejudices so strong that she fears “ugly people” is a tad too strong to digest. It makes one wonder if the makers were keen to create a stereotypical character “good girl” who is pure of heart and mind in all other aspects except one. The makers have cast Khurana as the “ugly” male lead,otherwise a fairly attractive actor. One wonders if he will be given a makeover,a la Mona Singh in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi.

Should you be watching it? The way the story is progressing,there is a chance that Rahul will switch places with Madhav as RJ Ehsaas. It might be interesting to watch how the story stays true to its theme in case it does take such a Saajan-esque twist.
