Inter-school debate at DPS,Mathura Road
The inter-school debate for juniors was held at the Delhi Public School,Mathura Road,in the first week of February. The debate touched upon the issue of the impact that advertisements have on the society. The topic of the debate was Advertisements do more harm than good.
Fifteen schools vied for the prestigious rolling trophy. Each speaker whether in favour or against the motion spoke with a lot of conviction. Quoting great thinkers and educationists,narrating real life instances of the effects of advertisement and supplementing their arguments with relevant data,the students spoke with authority and confidence. The jury,comprising Sakal Bhatt,senior journalist of DD News and actor Nasir Abdullah,were very impressed by the young debaters.
The chairperson,Nalin Ranjan,Director of NRAI Institute of Mass Communication,also praised the youngsters.
A visit to the heritage museum
The students of Shaheed Bishan Singh Memorial Sr Sec School,Mansarover Garden,visited the ASI Childrens Museum for Heritage at Sirifort Complex on February 4. It was a learning experience for the students to see the old wall made in 11th Century and other specimen found during excavation. The museum also had photographs of monuments across India. The damage of the monuments by the advent of civilisation and the passage of time was depicted in a very innovative manner. Students pledged to help preserve and protect the heritage structures of the country. The visit was organised by The India Express.
Visit to Planet Toyz
Last week the tiny tots of Abhinav Public School,Pitampura,visited Planet Toyz,a unique fun library where there is a toy for everyone. All students participated in a reading programme called Hug-a-Book. Children also enjoyed various fun-filled games. The visit was a joint effort of the Planet Toyz and the Abhinav Public School to encourage reading and play method to widen a childs intellectual reach.
Farewell at KR Mangalam,Vikaspuri
KR Mangalam World School,Vikaspuri,bid adieu to its batch of Class XII on January 29. Footprints 2011 was a heartfelt and emotional moment for everyone around. The event was attended by the principal Meenu Kanwar,senior co-ordinator Shalini Bajaj,middle co-ordinator Rajlakshmi,primary co-ordinator Jasleena Kohli,pre-primary co-ordinator Shalini Kaul and Clive.
The anchors welcomed the guests with a speech. A cultural programme was organised by the students of Class XI.
The title-giving ceremony was the most exciting segment of the day. Titles were given to all the students of Class XII. Mr and Miss KRM title was bagged by Pushpank Jain and Nishtha Piplani,respectively.
In keeping with the spirit,the programme commenced with the traditional passing of the legacy characterised by lighting the candle and passing over of the responsibilities of the school. The entire batch of Class XI stood together to welcome the challenges ahead. This was followed by a message to the outgoing batch by the principal,the co-ordinators,class teachers and other teachers. The outgoing students thanked the school and the juniors for making the day a memorable one.
A total of 110 students of the outgoing batch were presented with mementos.
Banyan Tree School promotes green practices
A team of Green Planeteers from the Banyan Tree School has become the torch bearers in promoting the concept of waste minimisation and recycling among the school community and its other stakeholders in order to achieve environmental sustainability.
Stressing on the fact that waste is a resource in the wrong place,the school has been trying to implement and interweave the four Rs reduce,recycle,reuse and rethink into the fabric of the lives of its students and staffers. Moreover,the enthusiasm demonstrated by the core group led to a fruitful collaboration with NGO Goonj,under the banner,Sneh Uphaar,for collecting and distributing clothes and books among children residing in the far-flung villages of the country. In a genuine effort to reduce carbon footprints,GOOS (Good On One Side) bins were also placed in the school premises,so that the blank side of the paper could be reused/recycled judiciously. Meanwhile,the transition campaign,Share Your World under Project SEARCH (Sensitisation,Education and Awareness on Recycling for Cleaner Habitat),culminated in a march to the neighboring Mehr Chand Market and Lodhi Colony Market.The march was flagged off by school principal Smita Srivastava and Amrita Choudhary,Environment Communication Executive from Tetrapak. The 200-plus contingent from The Banyan Tree School,along with 50 students from the schools under the Eco Club umbrella,participated in the march. The highlight of the event was the nukkad natak presentation put up by the students at every halt,to educate the common man on the importance of recycling,conserving resources and,thereby,healing the planet.
St Marks School,Meera Bagh,attends Paryavaran Mela
Shivangi Arora (VIII-A) and Tanya Gupta (VIII-B) of the Eco Club of St Marks Sr Sec Public School,Meera Bagh,participated in Paryavaran Mitra Mela,in Ajmer. The festival was held between January 31 and February 4. They were accompanied by their teacher incharge M Pathak. Among the various activities organised for the event were guest lectures,competitions,games and nature walks.
Avid bird watchers Dr Madhu and Dr K K Sharma gave the lectures. Farhan Contractor gave a presentation on how people of Rajasthan are involved in rainwater harvesting by making beris and step wells. The effort has led to an increase in the watertable,making agriculture possible in the area.
An exhibition showcased the projects and ideas of participants from 13 states. The stall set up by St Marks students was highly appreciated.
All students participated enthusiastically in the bird-watching at the Ana Sagar Lake in front of the Regional Institute of Education. Students got the opportunity to see rare species of birds like Yellow-footed Green Pigeon,Drongo,Babbler,Stilt,Lapwing and ducks like Mallard,Shovler,Egrets,Dabchick,Pintail,etc.
The Paryavaran Mitra quiz was the main event of the event,where St Marks students outshone others. Of the five finalists from Delhi,Chandigarh,J&K,Chhattisgarh and Punjab St Marks topped the quiz with a total of 115 points. The second position was bagged by students of Chhattisgarh with 75 points.
