As a part of its Safe City project, Ghaziabad police Sunday converted 20 police outposts into pink booths and provided a police van to each.

The main aim of the initiative is to stop crime against women in the city, Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation General V K Singh (retired) said while inaugurating the pink booths virtually at a programme held in Police Lines.

“As per the directions of the Ministry of Women and Child Development…the Safe City Project is being implemented in 18 metropolitan cities of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow. As part of this scheme, 20 pink police booths and 20 pink police vans have been made operational in Ghaziabad metropolitan city. Women police personnel will be deployed at these booths and will be responsible for prevention and investigation of incidents related to crime against women,” the Ghaziabad MP said.

Singh added, “One female police sub-inspector and four female head constables/constables are being deployed at each pink police booth. They will be on duty in two shifts from 7 am to 10 pm every day. Provision of at least two rooms of 10×12 feet and one toilet has been ensured in each pink police booth.”

Ghaziabad Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra said that in the event of any woman coming to the pink booth with a complaint, the personnel deployed at the booth will immediately ensure action and if an FIR has to be registered, the victim woman will be immediately taken to the concerned police station in the pink mobile (van) for the purpose.

“At present, a total of five women police officers, including a woman sub-inspector, have been appointed at each police booth. The number of officials will be increased to eight or 10 in the near future. Along with this, additional pink booths will be opened,” said Mishra.

Officials said that under the project, a total of 6,030 cameras have been installed so far and the number will be 7,000 by the end of September.
