More than 30 Delhi University students, who took out a procession in solidarity with a Srinagar-Imphal yatra against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) on Tuesday, were stopped en route by members of a right-wing group that called itself India Integration Forum. The students were later detained by police.

Organised by DU students and teachers to support members of the yatra, led by Irom Sharmila’s brother Irom Singhjhit, the procession was flagged off from the entrance of the Delhi University Arts Faculty. However, the group was stopped on the road by members of the IIF,who targeted them with black ink and tomatoes.

When the stand-off continued for over an hour, police reached the spot. While the students were forced into vehicles, members of the forum were allowed to go. All the detained students, six of them girls, were released at 6.30 pm.

Police claimed that the students had not taken permission before the march. The marchers,on the other hand, said the police action was unwarranted. “No action was taken against the people who waylaid us. The police had been informed of the programme,” said Amrapali,Assistant Professor at Kirori Mal College.

“We had submitted all the details of the programme to the Maurice Nagar police station. They gave us permission this morning. We have filed a complaint against the people who stopped the rally,” said Mukesh Basolia,a student.

The Srinagar-Imphal anti-AFSPA yatra began in Srinagar on Sunday, and reached Delhi from Sonipat on Wednesday.
