Women officers
In a sign of the growing strength and role of women in the Armed forces,no less than six women officers took part in the Republic Day parade this year,a number that has never been seen before. While the Air Force had three women officers in its marching contingent,one of the armoured reconnaissance vehicles of the Army was led by a woman officer.
Pak,Afghan journalists
In a departure from norms,this years parade saw a strong contingent of viewers from the Pakistani and Afghan media. Close to three dozen journalists from the two countries,who are here on a tour arranged by the External Affairs,ministry saw the parade.
Gujarat marketing
While Gujarat stayed far away from any show of Hinduvta by showcasing its Buddhist heritage in the state tableau,it was the only state that distributed brochures of its display at the parade. The marketing style of the state left many surprised.
Notable absentee
While the top political leadership as well as Opposition were seen at the parade,UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was a notable absentee. While she has been a regular at past events,there was no explanation for her absence at this years parade.
Secular tableau
Tableau from Opposition-run states remained most discussed with the spectators gushing about the floats underlining the theme of secularism. Gujarat,Karnataka and Bihar all ruled by the BJP or its allies rolled out tableau on themes of Buddhism,Sufi Bidri art and the shrine of Maner in Patna,respectively.
