More than 55 per cent residents cast their votes on Sunday to choose the councillors for the three civic agencies, into which the MCD has been divided this year.
This is the highest voter turnout for the municipal polls since 1993. State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta said the turnout ranged between 55 per cent and 58 per cent.
Around 42 per cent voters had exercised their franchise during the previous MCD polls.
Mehta said the numbers could change, but it is likely that Delhi will now graduate from third division voters percentage to second division.
There are people who came to polling booths at 5 pm,and so had to be allowed to vote. They are still voting, said Mehta,at a press meet late evening.
Out of the 11,500 polling stations, eight experienced glitches with the EVMs.
Only eight EVMs witnessed faults as they sealed due to technical problem, our engineers de-sealed them and made them available for voting, said Mehta.
Two villages Laudpur and Sannoth boycotted voting, protesting certain decisions taken by the municipal body.
Mehta said rural areas witnessed more voter turnout than urban areas.
Till now,Vasant Kunj has recorded the lowest percentage at 43 per cent. Last elections, voters percentage at Vasant Kunj was 28 per cent. The highest turnout is in New Ashok Nagar at 65 per cent. Chhawala voters also came in good numbers the turnout is 62per cent, said Mehta.
As per official records,East Delhi had the best voters turnout followed by North Delhi.
It is sad that South Delhi still sees a low turnout. We will observe the trends and reasons for low turnout and will bring it before the voters to know the difficulty they face, said Mehta.
Sanjay Colony,Sangam Vihar and Neb Sarai also reported healthy voter turnout.
There have been queues till the gate since the morning. The turnout has been exceptional. Even during lunch hours, people turned up in large numbers, said a poll official.
At Deepalya School in Sanjay Colony, voters had to be stopped at the gate in view of the huge rush.
Areas like Zakir Nagar and Batla House turnout till noon was low.
Only 7.2 per cent people had voted till 10 am in Zakir Nagar,47 per cent cast their votes till the end of the day, said the sector officer.
No violence was reported from the city during the polling process.
Delhi-Congress chief J P Aggarwal and Delhi-BJP Vijender Gupta both staked claim to victory.
People voted in large numbers. I am 100 per cent sure we will win, Aggarwal said.
Gupta said,We are certainly going to win MCD elections. This is a vote against the corruption. added Gupta.
