The 7th Delhi NCR Cup,the only amateur golf tournament in the country that the Delhi Golf Colb hosts annually is being played this year from March 6-9. There are various accolodes to be won as there will be a team championship winner,a Delhi State championships winner and the title holder. The organisers of the tournament, the Delhi Golf Society, received record entries this time, the tally going as high as 135 but the field was eventually brought down to 75 with most of the top ranked Indian Golf Union amateurs committing to the championship.

The tournament however is not restricted to amateurs only from the national capital region. In order to maintain competitive scoring it was decided that players should have a handicap of four or below to be able to participate. While the long-standing tournament has attracted entries from Pakistan,Sri Lanka,Nepal,Portugal and Korea,India also has a strong contingent in All-India Amateur Championship winner Angad Cheema,Ashbeer Saini from Kapurthala and Udayan Mane from Bangalore.

However, the only edge golfers like city boy Honey Baisoya will have is that the NCR players will also be competing for the Delhi State Championships within this event and the winner of that along with the top Indian in the four-day event will be sent for a national amateur championships in an European country.

Last year’s winners were sent to Portugal, and as a reciprocatory gesture, the golf club where they played has sent a team – Joao Ramos and Pierre Rolland – at this event . Apart from them,Pakistan’s Syed Shoaib Bokhari and Abbas Ali Khan,Sri Lanka’s Thangaraja Nadaraja and George Patrick,Nepal’s Bikash Bogati and Dinesh Prajapati will also be playing as teams in the first two days in strokeplay format while in the last two days, the players will be competing for the title as individuals.

“I am very excited that such a tournament is organised for us every year because this is the only opportunity when us amateurs can test our game at a course as competitive as the DGC. It helps in improving our game a lot,I just hope more such tournaments can be organised,” Cheema, the 22-year old Chandigarh golfer who won the All-India in January, said.

Golf in school,college games

Delhi Golf Society’s general secretary HS Kangra also announced that the body has moved the All-India University and the School Games federation to include inter-college and inter-school golf in their yearly meets in order to popularise the sport at a mass level.
