Rain lashes Delhi, brings relief from heat; incidents of wall collapse, uprooted trees reported

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius which, however, was still three notches above the season's average according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A spell of rain coupled with gusty wind lashed parts of the capital, bringing the mercury down and spelling relief for Delhi’s residents Saturday.

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius which, however, was still three notches above the season’s average according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Rain lashed North Campus, East Delhi, Shahdara, Northeast Delhi as well as South Delhi following a cloudy morning. The IMD had predicted light rain or a drizzle during the day and the maximum temperature likely to settle at 36 degrees Celsius.

The humidity recorded at 8.30 am was 84 percent while the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the moderate category at 112 around 12 noon.

The sudden spell of rain accompanied by wind, however, led to waterlogging in addition to triggering incidents of wall collapse as well as uprooted trees.

Around 11 vehicles were damaged in east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area following a school wall collapse. The incident was reported from the SG Pocket.

Meanwhile, incidents of trees falling were reported from Northwest Delhi’s West Shalimar Bagh, Block B,F in Shalimar Bagh and Gujranwala Town in North Delhi’s Model Town. No injuries were caused to anyone and the vehicles which reported to have suffered only minor damage.

According to the MCD, waterlogging was reported from near the Tata Power Limited office on Kanjhawala Road in Northwest Delhi. On the other hand, traffic was affected at several locations including along the Delhi-Gurgaon border.

“Traffic is affected on Outer Ring Road in the carriageway from Bhairon Mandir towards Savitri flyover due to an uprooted tree near Paras flyover,” the Delhi Traffic Police said on X.

“Traffic is affected on Mathura Road in the carriageway from Ashram towards Badarpur due to waterlogging near Aali village,” they said in another post.

Congestion was also reported from Ajmeri Gate, the Ber Sarai-JNU junction, from Modi Mill to Chirag Delhi Flyover, the Anand Vihar-Dilshad Garden stretch, Bharat Nagar, Bawana Road and Janakpuri among other locations.
