Around 14 railway stations in Delhi-NCR are set to get a mega makeover as part of the central government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). These stations are among 508 that will be revamped across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the railway station redevelopment project Sunday, said officials.

There are a total 71 stations under the Northern Railways, of which 14 are in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). However, Delhi’s two major stations —New Delhi and Anand Vihar —are not part of this project.

“Both these projects will be done differently. The NDLS revamp is a big project and a tender failed previously. Now, the tender has been floated again and pre-bid meetings have been held. Besides, at Anand Vihar there is a plan to extend two lines,” said an official from the Northern Railways.

Under the redevelopment plan, the key objectives are to give stations a facelift, lay new railway lines, ensure 100% electrification and enhance safety of assets and passengers.

General Manager, Northern Railways, Shobhan Choudhury, during a press conference Friday said the Prime Minister will inaugurate the ABSS scheme across India by launching redevelopment works at 508 stations.

“508 railway stations across the country are being revamped to provide state-of-the-art amenities to passengers. The stations will also showcase the grandeur of India, its art and rich cultural heritage,” said Choudhury.

Officials further added that under the scheme, unwanted structures on the railway lines will be removed, lighting will be improved, stations will be upgraded with parking space and made disabled friendly. Further, lifts, escalators, concourses, waiting rooms and retail areas with modern facilities will be provided for the benefit of the passengers.

Of the total 71 stations in the northern states, one is in Chandigarh, one in Himachal Pradesh, 21 in Punjab, 10 in Haryana, 2 in Uttarakhand, 28 in UP served by Northern Railways, 3 in J&K and 5 in Delhi-NCR.
