There is a certain sense of calm and simplicity that one associates with designer Payal Pratap’s personality. It is these traits that one sees at her maiden store in the Capital. The shop in Lodhi Colony main market which once housed designer Manish Arora’s label Fish Fry now accommodates the earthy and minimalistic settings of Pratap’s three-year-

old label.

The store is spacious and the decor simple, with terracotta flooring and inverted hanging pots, which reflect her influences, which are deeply rooted in rural Gujarat. Pratap extends her warmth to the store by adding a small garden and a wrought iron bench. It feels like home, almost.

For now,Pratap’s Spring-Summer 2013 collection is available at the store along with a range of leather footwear with antique gold chains, jaali bangles, earrings and evening bags. Pratap’s forte is her interpretation of traditional Indian silhouettes. So there are kedia tops, dhoti pants, maxi dresses derived from the basics of a choli, gilets over angarakhas, ghaghra pants, collared shorts, skirts, tunic kurtas and a mix of saris. The ensembles burst with colours, from mustard, lemon, orange, blue, onion, purple to beiges and whites. Cross-stitch on garments is a constant, and though it may seem repetitive with most pieces sporting the stitch,it is slowly becoming Pratap’s signature. And we are not complaining.

Our favourite is a pair of colourful pants, with cross-stitch and subtle sequins all over, which has boho-chic written all over it. A sheer net sari in beige with onion geometric stitches is a bit low on the colour palette but clearly stands out for its colour combination nonetheless. Pratap,as always, continues to bestow her love upon light fabrics such as monga silk, chanderi, cotton silk and cotton voiles. The price range is between Rs 10,000 and Rs 65,000.
