South Asian University (SAU) campus in Delhi (Source: File)Following allegations that four men attempted to sexually assault a student at the South Asian University (SAU) campus in Delhi, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR and launched a probe.
Tense scenes unfolded late Monday night on campus as dozens of students staged a protest after the alleged incident came to light. Visuals from SAU showed packed corridors, with students seated on the floor shoulder to shoulder, as university officials stood at the far end of the hallway addressing them.
“The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, and the administration is extending full cooperation to the investigating authorities,” the university had said in a statement.
According to the Delhi Police, a call was received at Maidangarhi police station around 3 pm on Monday. “The call was made by somebody known to the student,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan.
Police said the student was counselled and was taken to a hospital. She later submitted a statement.
According to police, the student has alleged that four people allegedly attempted to assault her while she was making her way to the campus canteen on Sunday. “In her complaint, the student stated that she was grabbed by four men and her clothes were torn off,” the officer said.
One of the accused is a non-teaching staff member.
DCP Chauhan said based on her statement, an FIR has been registered and the case is being investigated with due sensitivity and priority.
The case has been lodged under sections of attempt to commit offence and assault, an officer said.
