A day after a 52-year-old property dealer was shot dead near his home in Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar (East), a social media post purportedly put up by gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu surfaced on Saturday, taking responsibility for the murder.

He allegedly claimed responsibility in a Facebook post, citing gang rivalry as the motive, said police, adding that they are trying to verify the authenticity of the post.

Three men who allegedly attacked Rajkumar Dalal, the property dealer, have also been identified, sources in the police said. They are believed to be from Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar, they added.

“I claim the responsibility for the murder that took place in Paschim Vihar. The two brothers (Dalal and his brother) were occupying plots for (rival) Manjeet Mahal. They also went to meet him when he was out on parole,” the post read.

The property dealer’s brother lives in the same locality as him. “Whoever will be close to Mahal will meet the same fate,” the post added.

Nandu is believed to be operating from the United Kingdom and gangster Mahal, who is in jail, is Nandu’s rival.

Dalal was on his way to the gym in his SUV when he was attacked allegedly by three men waiting outside his society’s gate on Friday morning in a car.

The assailants allegedly fired 10 rounds at him. Dalal was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, said an officer.

Police teams from the Outer District, Crime Branch, and the Special Cell have been tasked to nab the culprits.

Nandu gained notoriety by extorting money from local businessmen in Southwest Delhi and emerged as a rival to Mahal, a resident of Nazafgarh. He was on the run before he was arrested by Rajasthan Police following a shootout in 2016 and was in jail till 2019 when he was granted parole for a month when he fled. Several Special Cell and Crime Branch teams have been on his trail.

Police said Nandu is wanted for cases related to murder, extortion, and attempt to murder, and others filed under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. The Special Cell of Delhi Police had registered a case against him in connection with the procurement of a fake passport. A non-bailable warrant (NBW) and a red corner notice (RCN) have already been issued against him by the agencies in different cases.

He is also wanted in the murder of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Nafe Singh Rathee. The Haryana MLA was gunned down inside his SUV in Bahadurgarh on February 25, 2024. The murder case is being investigated by the CBI. A similar post had surfaced on social media following Rathee’s killing, citing the INLD leader’s association with Mahal.

On July 31, 2020, a team of the Special Cell’s Counter Intelligence unit arrested his brother, Jyoti Sangwan, from Surat. His brother and rival gangster Mahal both are lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail.

Two shooters from his gang were arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell from Bengaluru in January for allegedly gunning down three persons at the parking lot of The Sultanat Hotel at Pinjore in Haryana’s Panchkula on December 23 when they were leaving a birthday party.
