The entrance to ‘FT 07’ is unassuming, nothing seems out of place. A blue door creaks open to reveal a room with 32 double-seater desks. Numerals and formulae fill the whiteboard hung on one of the green walls.

FT 07,located on the third floor, was Shobhit Modi’s (20) classroom in Manav Rachna University. The 20-year-old was found with multiple stab wounds metres from his residence late on Thursday night in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.

The words ‘recovery and atomicity’ are written across the whiteboard in black ink, perhaps something Shobhit copied in his notebook as well.

His desk, with pale-yellow wooden panel, has figures and words scribbled across it. ‘Grafiti’ in neat calligraphy is etched in bold black ink. On one side are the words ‘anonymous world’ written inside a rather disfigured globe.

“He was an innocuous boy,and kept to himself. There was nothing extraordinary about him,” said Mohit Choudhury, assistant professor at the University, who mentored Shobhit during his fourth semester. “He had come to the university a few days ago to collect his admit card as his examinations were due on May 9,” he added.

A few other professors believe Shobhit was a “self indulgent boy”. From his Facebook profile,Shobhit appears to have an interest in heavy metal and cryptography. A website he created in 2009 has links to various hacking websites.

“He was very good at the C language. Computers were his passion,” said Meeta Singh, who taught Shobhit in first semester.
