A private hospital in Greater Noida has been accused of allegedly operating on the wrong eye of a seven-year-old boy. While the hospital charged Rs 45,000 for the alleged procedure, said police Thursday, a follow-up at another facility claimed no evidence of surgery on either eye.

However, a hospital representative attributed the incident to a nurse’s error, claiming the wrong eye was bandaged by mistake and there was no fraud.

Bisrakh resident Nitin Bhati took his son to the hospital after the seven-year-old’s left eye was watering persistently for over a week. The hospital suggested a surgery to remove a foreign object from the eye. “The doctor told me that they suspected there was some plastic inside his eyes and suggested a surgery to correct it,” Bhati said.

The child was allegedly operated on November 11. “They took him to the operation theatre around 9:30 am but within two minutes came back and told me that the operation was successful and also showed me an image of the plastic that was taken out from my son’s eye,” Bhati alleged.

He was told that his son was doing fine and could be taken home. “When I took him home, my mother pointed out that my son had a complaint in his left eye, while the bandage was on his right. I ran back to the hospital with my son but could not find the doctor. I then took him to another hospital,” Bhati told The Indian Express. During a follow-up at the second facility, a doctor found no evidence of surgery on either eye, the father claimed.

Distressed, the family attempted to file a police complaint, but the matter was referred to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for investigation. “A private hospital has been accused of charging Rs 45,000 fraudulently from a family. However, the matter has been forwarded to the CMO for investigation”, said Vidyut Goyal, SHO, Beta 2.

Meanwhile, CMO Sunil Kumar Sharma said the matter has not been reported to his office yet. “As we get the complaint from police in the incident, the case will be investigated. I have no information on the matter,” he said.

Bhati claimed that on November 12, he went to confront the doctor who allegedly operated on the child. But the doctor tried to tear the prescription and thrashed him, Bhati alleged, adding, “We just want accountability. The hospital should be held responsible, and we demand a full refund”.
