The universal theme of the dysfunctional family gets a comic twist in Delhi-based theatreperson,Madhu Sagars,latest play,The Pill: Ibuprofen,to be staged at the American Centre today and tomorrow. An adaptation of an American comic play written by James A Munro and Jamie A Munro,it introduces the audience to two divorcees in their seventies who find a different kind of love. Sagar,the founder of Stage Lights,says that she goes back to the basics of comedy with this play. I love doing comedies that entertain people after a hard days work. They need to sit down and have a good laugh,and this play fits the bill perfectly, said the 53-year-old.
One of the protagonist,Freddie has famously shunned women. Another character,Dolly,flits around regaling everybody she meets with details about her career as an actress in a 1950s show,Another Day.
But when their children,Elizabeth and Stanley,decide to set them up on a blind date,Freddie and Dollys lives are set to take a different turn.
Over two months,Sagar,who plays Dolly,meticulously sketched the characters in her mind. Dolly has a split personality and keeps reminiscing about her past glory days of being an actress. She constantly drifts from the present to the past,a quality that makes this role challenging, says Sagar.
The play will be staged on November 19 and 20 at the American Centre at 7 pm.
