Where to splash around this summer

As degree Celsius becomes diabolic, all you can do in beach-less Delhi is put on the swimsuit, slap on some sunscreen and slide into a pool. The Capital’s hotels have geared up to accommodate the pool rush, with some focusing on personalised swimming classes and others pampering with aromatic oils while you laze on poolside benches.

The Park will introduce a day package called Zen (Rs,7,000). After a dip in the pool, you can enjoy an aromatherapy massage with natural oils or choose from a host of other rubdowns. It also includes an hour-long customised wrap and even facial, hairstyling and manicure thrown in. “It is like a half-day-out for the individual,” says Saurabh Khanna, spa manager,Aura. It also has spa packages like Summer Coolers with old summer remedies like hibiscus, coconut cream and gooseberries. Price: Rs 2,000-3,000. One can also indulge in a game of pool volley on Sundays. Just register and play ball for two hours. You will be charged only for the food and drinks you consume. But if all that you want is to take a few laps in the pool, pay Rs 700 for one-time use.

The Metropolitan Hotel is also ready with its pool packages. You have to pay Rs 7,000 to use the pool for a month,Rs 14,000 for three months and Rs 23,000 for six months. Children (12 to 18 years) will be charged Rs 4,000,Rs 12,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

The InterContinental Hotel Eros has a package of 20 swimming classes a month for individuals and groups. Individual coaching comes for Rs 25,000 a month, and group coaching Rs 15,000 a month. If you are a sporadic swimmer,go for classes costing Rs 1,500 a day. “We were not focusing too much on the coaching aspect earlier, but now we have hired a coach,” says Pankaj Bhola, director, marketing and communications. There is also seasonal membership for April-October. It comes for Rs 55,000 for adults and Rs 65,000 for a couple.

Other than the expensive hotels, the YMCA near Jantar Mantar has its timetable allotted for basic and advance swimming classes. A month-long coaching session comes for a reasonable Rs 1,500. You can use the pool for practice by paying Rs 3,300 for three months. Compared with last year, there has been a 10-15 per cent hike in rates. “Since many pools are getting renovated for the Commonwealth Games and are unavailable,we have hiked our rates,” says Gaurav Kumar, sports officer.

The Khazan Singh Academy near JNU,run by the 1984 Arjuna awardee Khazan Singh,is charging Rs 1,300 for the first month of swimming lessons. Second month onwards, you have to pay a modest Rs 800 only. “We have a team of three coaches certified by the National Institute of Sports to train the students,” says Singh. Plunge in.
