North Delhi district police on Sunday launched its “She to Shakti” drive whereby women residents joined police to ensure women’s safety.
Police said they first carried out a huge awareness drive to attract volunteers. Women volunteers were then given basic training in unarmed combat techniques.
They were also told about legal rights and powers available to women and provisions in the law for the safety of women.

“The women volunteers were then divided into groups of 20 each and given a distinct khakhi jacket with the word “Shakti” emblazoned on them. Each group then set out on their inspection drives accompanied by a few police personnel.
The groups marched through crime-prone and vulnerable areas where eve-teasing and other related crimes are relatively high,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said. The drive will cover sensitive public spaces frequented by women in North district.
