To raise public awareness on a number of issues plaguing society,a nukkad natak was organised by the Delhi Police at Jaitpur village an unauthorised colony,and one of the most backward areas of Delhi on the outskirts of Southeast Delhi on Tuesday. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Chaudhry was the chief guest. The event,organised by police in collaboration with NGO Jaagran,was divided into three short plays on drug de-addiction,domestic violence and sexual abuse. All three plays were based on real-life stories and aimed to heighten awareness among the public particularly women and children. Incidents of domestic violence are high among the strata of society that resides in this area. Alcoholism and drug abuse are also common here. Hence,we decided to have an interactive event with the public, said Chaudhry. The event started with songs on social change and poems recited by children. The plays repeatedly stressed on issues such as verification of tenants,informing the police about any strangers in the locality,etc. The first story was on drug abuse how a wealthy mans son falls into bad company after his strict father sends him off to a hostel. The second play was on the life of a woman and her children caught in a web of domestic violence. The third was on sexual abuse how rapists are usually known to victims,and the stigma attached to such incidents.
