Two-time Grammy award winner,US rapper and hip-hop artist T-Pain about his inspiration and the upcoming India tour
At the age of 10,a little boy from Tallahasee,Florida, locked himself up in his bedroom with his keyboard and a four-track recorder to create his own cocktail of rap music. Years later, the youngster has metamorphosed into T-Pain and is a talented 25-year-old who is known for his gritty lyrics. His knack for experimental musical collaborations with other experienced artists has inspired many other hip-hop artists. And,his debut single Im Sprung has propelled him to the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Winner of two Grammy awards in a span of three years, the artist is now preparing for his India debut.
You were born Faheem Rasheed Najm. How did you become T-Pain?
My parents were entrepreneurs from Miami and they moved to Tallahassee, before I was born. The name T-Pain represents my struggle while growing up and trying to break into the music scene. The T stands for Tallahassee and Pain refers to my struggles and strife during childhood. There arent many record executives that come from Tallahassee,so you really gotta make a lot of noise to get recognised and heard.
How did you cultivate a taste for rap and hip-hop?
My dad was a big influence. I have loved rap from day one,but it wasnt just rap and hip-hop. I love all music and appreciate all genres.
Are you apprehensive about visiting India?
Im excited. Its a new territory for me and I hear the fans are very supportive. I feel that there is a lot of opportunity there.
What is the inspiration behind your music? For instance,I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper) was written after taking a friend to a strip club. Do you usually follow such literal inspirations?
My inspiration comes from my surroundings. I write about stuff that happens to me or the people around me,and sometimes its as literal as being in love with a stripper. The idea for I’m N Love … came after taking a friend to a strip club, just as an idea of a joke. He was staring at the girls as though he was in love with the strippers. And the single was born.
You are known for your music collaborations. Any plans of tying up with Indian artists?
I recently did a song with Aadesh Srivastava and am planning many more.
T-Pain will perform as part of Tuborg VH1 Hip Hop Hustle,on June 18,at Quantum,Sector-18,Noida. The ticket costs Rs 2,500. Contact: 9810746725.
