On display,Down Under to ground level

In the last 12 years, the Australian High Commission has funded over 100 grassroots projects in India and Bhutan.

In the last 12 years, the Australian High Commission has funded over 100 grassroots projects in India and Bhutan. On Friday, the commission inaugurated an exhibition — Echoes — to showcase these projects.

Echoes is a show of stories funded by Australia’s Direct Aid Program (DAP). From vocational classes for children to people getting eye exams, they have all been funded at a total cost of Rs 6.6 crore, since DAP’s inception in 2001. Drawings and pictures were on display with an explanation of associated programmes, while the commission held a conference to help people raise funds for their causes.

Vidusha Sharma said she used funds from DAP last year, after overcoming struggles in her personal life,to empower women. She was given Rs 6.75 lakh to buy equipment to teach sewing to 240 women in Dwarka over a year.

“All the women were either working as… maids or lived with husbands who are not working,” Sharma said. “This was about women empowerment.”

Caitlin Bell, the commission’s secondary secretary, said the programme has become very competitive. She said in the last round,DAP only accepted about 20 of more than 600 applicants. Sums of up to Rs 10 lakh were awarded. “We provide a very modest amount, but it’s amazing what they do with that money,” Bell said.

The event was inaugurated by Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner Bernard Philip. “The Direct Aid Program has funded projects across India, covering a range of issues from livelihood projects for women in Jammu and Kashmir to bio-kitchen gardens in Tamil Nadu. We hope that DAP continues to touch the lives of Indian people,” Philip said.
