Three current and former women office-bearers from the BJP and a mix of probables from several communities have been recommended as fresh faces for the four vacant non-official member positions on the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), The Indian Express has learnt.

According to party sources, the Delhi BJP had sent its recommendations for the post of vice-chairperson and three other members following the party national unit’s directions last week.

The list, sources said, includes eight names from within the party ranks, all of which will be fresh faces, as the BJP does not plan to repeat any of the current members.

“The names, which are understood to have been sent to the national unit are RP Singh, Raj Kumar Falwaria, Sunita Kangra, Dinesh Pratap Singh, Sona Kumari, Anil Sharma, Virender Babbar and Raj Bala Dagar,” a BJP leader said.

“Apart from these, several other names, including that of Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, and senior leaders from the Delhi BJP are said to be under consideration. However, the appointments may be delayed due to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections,” another leader said.

The 13-member council includes officials from the bureaucracy, elected members and non-official members, with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) nominating the latter for a five-year term. Four out of five official members have been appointed by MHA.

These include officials from various government departments — one each from MHA and the Delhi government, and two from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The current elected members include New Delhi BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, New Delhi AAP MLA Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Cantonment AAP MLA Virendra Singh Kadian, as the jurisdiction of their constituencies falls under the council.

Anil Sharma, a former MLA from RK Puram and a former Deputy Mayor of the MCD, is recognised for his organisational work within the Delhi unit, while Virender Babbar, also a Delhi BJP spokesperson, had also served as an MCD Standing Committee member.

The women candidates understood to have been suggested include Sunita Kangra, Raj Bala and Sona Kumari. Kangra, who was the Mayor of the erstwhile South Delhi Municipal Corporation in 2019, is currently one of the eight state secretaries of the Delhi BJP. Bala is associated with the party’s Mahila Morcha and Kumari is a Delhi BJP secretary.
