The Delhi government downplayed all talk of Monday being the ‘real test’ of the odd-even road rationing scheme, but kept up the preparatory tempo ahead of the full-fledged working day.
Transport Minister Gopal Rai held a coordination meeting with all departments and Delhi Police Sunday to ensure action against violators. He claimed rules were relaxed on the first two days of the policy being implemented, as it was a chance to make people aware about the rules.
Some schools have resisted giving their buses for use and it has hit the government’s plans. Rai said he would put out a list of 20-odd schools that have not cooperated. “BJP or Congress schools we don’t care, we will put out (a) list of those who have not sent in their buses despite my repeated requests.” He also requested the police to put more of their personnel besides traffic officials on the roads.
The transport department, which is working in two shifts of 33 teams each, will be out in full force. The government has planned to have maximum civil defence volunteers in the field. All district magistrates, sub-divisional magistrates, additional district magistrates and tehsildars would be on roads to challan those who flout norms.
Metro will run 493 trips, which is more than usual, with a capacity to carry 32 lakh commuters. This ridership would be 20 per cent more than usual. DTC too would be out in full strength. “Till now DTC was carrying 48 lakh commuters, but on Monday it will carry 64 lakh so that no commuter faces any problem,” said Rai.
To minimise long waits and crowded buses, the government will have a squad of 100 buses sent in lots of 25 each to four zones. If there is more crowd, people can call on the helpline launched by government and lodge complaints. DTC managing director would monitor the complaints and send in additional buses to the spot.
“These 100 buses will be sent where people have problem with availability of public transport. In the last two days, we saw a few points that witnessed more people inflow and less buses,” said Rai.
He added that people were calling in to become volunteers and participate in enforcement of the scheme.
