You may not be big on raw fish, but if you have fantasised about balancing a perfectly rolled out sushi on your chopsticks, then Sushi King Japanese and Oriental Restaurant is worth a stopover. You will get your fish grilled and you eel barbecued. And the Japanese might draw their samurai swords over these, but chicken-and-mayo sushi gets the pride of place here.

Sushi King began as a home-delivery unit last year, sending out trays of miso soup, udon noodles and sashimi platters to doorsteps across the NCR. Now you can land on its doorstep. Its restaurant, located in Gurgaon’s Cyber City,is smartly decked in tones of black and gold. The décor is minimal, but the menu isn’t. It offers a variety of Japanese dishes, many of them tweaked, and throws in Thai,Indonesian and Burmese cuisine as well.

We begin our meal with the safe and traditional Miso soup (Rs 88 for vegetarian),but if you want to try something different,go for a bowl of the sumptuous Shrimp Soup (Rs 228) simpering with sesame flavour. From the salad section,we pick the summery Indonesian Salad (Rs 98). Their list of side orders can double as starters and we opt for Gyoza (Rs 168 for chicken),a pan-grilled dumpling with a crispy thin base and a mushy top. Among entrées,Negima Yaki Ebi (Rs 488) is refreshing. Several pieces of grilled prawns basted with a sweetish teriyaki sauce are served on skewers.

Sushi King also rolls out a variety of curries and Japanese noodles with classic teriyaki dressings. That apart, the menu lists pan-Asian favourties like Burmese Chicken Curry (Rs 298) and Indonesian Garlic Chicken (Rs 298).

Still itching for the sushi, are you? There are plenty of options for nigiri and maki rolls and you can see them getting rolled at the sushi counter. Tuna Sushi Roll begins at Rs 298 for eight pieces. Umai Sushi Roll (Rs 248) is a surprisingly delicious serving of chicken strips and mayo. A Takara (Rs 1,798) packs in 40 pieces of nine varieties of rolls and for meat lovers there is Yudai (Rs 1,398) with ham and chicken filling. Not raw,but certainly rare.
