Asking people not to panic after five people were exposed to radiation in the city,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said efforts will be made to ensure such incidents do not recur.
It is the civic agencys responsibilityto keep the city clean, she said. There is no need to panic. A team of scientists from BARC have inspected the area and I hope they will suggest measures so that such an incident does not happen again.
A senior official of the Environment Department said the government was gathering details about the radiation leak and will decide about future course of action based on the findings.
The situation is under control, said S K Malhotra,head of the Public Awareness Division of the Department of Atomic Energy. The radiation has come down to the background level and the area has been reopened to the public.
B B Bhattacharya,NDMA member and former BARC director,however,said they fear more people may have been exposed to radiation. There are around 200 scrap shops in the Mayapuri market.
