In the wake of Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Taniam’s death in the capital last month, Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi on Saturday announced a slew of measures for those from the Northeast living in the city.
At a press conference, Bassi said a special cell has been created for Northeast residents, headed by a DCP rank officer, who also belongs to the Northeast.
The Commissioner also said a special helpline number — 1093 — has been started to address complaints of Northeast residents.
“We already have the police control room number — 100 — but one can also lodge complaints on this helpline. We are working with the service providers to ensure that one is able to call this number directly without adding the STD code,” the police chief said.
“We want to ensure that help is provided instantly. There will be no delay once a complaint is received,”
Bassi said.
Kime Kaming, a 1994 batch IPS officer from Arunachal Pradesh, has been appointed the head of the special cell, which has its office at Nanakpura in South Delhi.
The cell has five phone lines currently, and the number will be increased in days to come, he said. About 25 officers in different ranks have been transferred to this unit.
Bassi said Kaming will coordinate with the officers from other police stations whenever a complaint is received. “Our officers will make coordinated efforts to ensure that those residing in the vulnerable areas feel secure. Initially, we had only seven nodal officers to deal with cases relating to residents of Northeast, but now each district has one officer. All district DCPs have been asked to meet students’ groups from Northeast and maintain a close rapport with them.
There will be periodic meetings and interactions, Bassi said. “We want to reassure that the Delhi Police is committed to protecting those from the Northeast, women, children and senior citizens,” he said.
Apart from all this, Bassi said a sensitisation programme for his men from the rank of constable to inspector will begin soon.
