NDMC to set up gymnasiums in employees colonies

While the newly built footpaths of New Delhi are great for long walks,the civic body maintaining them is planning to augment the fitness regime of residents by providing gymnasiums. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has floated a proposal to built gyms at 14 residential colonies for NDMC employees using porta cabins.

Officials said the move,aimed at ensuring the physical well-being of its employees,had been under consideration for some time now.

The issue was discussed at a recently held meeting,and will be further discussed . The proposal includes building porta cabins and fitting them with treadmill,cross trainer,exercise bikes and weight lifting benches etc for the benefit of the residents.

Some of the colonies that will get the gyms are located in Gole Market,Mandir Marg,Lodhi Road and Sarojini Nagar. While the Council has only chosen colonies that have more than 35 houses,the representatives of a certain association from Rohini Complex have refused it.

The civic body framed the proposal after a meeting with the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) of New Delhi area in June this year. During the meeting,it was discussed that the RWAs will maintain the gym, said a senior official of the NDMC.

While the civic body will pay for the equipment as well as construction of the porta cabins,the RWAs will have to collect membership fees to pay for maintenance and trainer fees. The expenditure is estimated to come upto around Rs 2.35 crore.

Issues such as protocols and guidelines,electricity and water charges,user fees and maintenance charges will be decided by the Welfare department, an official added.
