The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will soon notify its new solar policy for the national capital’s Lutyens’ Delhi area and will take a final decision on the draft policy next week.

NDMC plans to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy sources by pushing the installation of grid-connected solar plants in Lutyens’ Delhi, and has said the implementation of NDMC Solar Policy 2022 will help promote green and clean power and help reduce dependence on sources of conventional energy.

In its statement, NDMC said, “New NDMC of New India is the first municipality of India which is going to frame the policy for over 56 thousand electricity consumers, who can avail the schemes of NDMC Solar Policy 2022, which will be eco-friendly for the residents of NDMC area”.

NDMC had issued a draft of the policy in September 2022, urging residents of the area to install solar panels on their buildings. However, the policy’s implementation was halted due to public objections.

“Suggestions were taken from the public after the draft was released… Most suggestions have already been included in the policy, and some other public concerns are now being incorporated into the policy,” said Kuljeet Singh Chahal, NDMC Member.

“The policy is scheduled for discussion in the council meeting on Wednesday, it will be discussed and deliberated upon, after which a date for notification, as well as the implementation process, will be confirmed,” Chahal added.

Under the policy, solar plants can be adopted by electricity consumers in the area given the requirement that their solar energy generating system has a capacity of 1 KW or more. “Individual households, offices, commercial establishments, residential complexes etc. will be eligible for a project capacity of minimum 1KW or more,” the policy stated.

The policy aims to utilise the existing roof space of bungalow tops and other buildings. The rate and amount of applicable subsidy would be according to the approved rate, sanctioned amount and also on the basis of the allocated target by the Ministry of Renewable Energy.

According to Chahal, NDMC aims to make itself the first fully solar-driven government institution in Delhi by 2025.
