New Delhi Municipal Council has recommended that construction of two subways at Connaught Place be stopped. The second and third phase of the project is pending, while the first phase was completed. The council extended the deadline of the project to June 30,2013.
According to senior officials, the first phase of G-block subway, towards Panchkuian Road and H-block,towards Railway Colony was completed, but the council recommended stopping work at both subways. The total cost incurred on these two subways is Rs 1.49 crore and 1.71 crore respectively.
A senior NDMC official said the decision needs to be approved by the council. The completion of first phase means that only the digging was finished. The cost was so high because we had to do many other things like line shifting and clearing the area along with digging. Now,it has been recommended that the completed parts be used for profitable purposes, the official said.
Shelving of two more subways was done after the council slashed funds for the project by Rs 200 crore and scrapped a few components of the projects such as construction of subways at Yusuf Zai market,Chelmsford Road,State Entry Road and P-Block SBS Marg.
The plans for centralised air-conditioning and construction of an underground parking lot in Inner Circle were also dropped.
The NDMC chairperson Archana Arora,in her budget address, had hinted that construction of the two subways might be stopped. She claimed that the public did not want subways. We spoke to people and they said they did not want subways. So we dropped the project and focused on improving existing subways, Arora said.
