Mukhtar Ansari gang sharpshooter Shahrukh Pathan killed in shootout with UP Police

A sharpshooter said to be affiliated with the Sanjeev Jeeva gang and gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was allegedly killed in a shootout with the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Muzaffarnagar district early Monday.

According to the police, Shahrukh Pathan, 35, was injured during a search operation in the Chhapar police station launched by Meerut police STF, and was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.

“There had been several serious criminal cases registered against him, including murder, extortion, and attempted murder. Police during the encounter also recovered several country-made arms, including pistols and revolvers, cartridges and a white Maruti Brezza car without a number plate,” the police said in a statement.

According to the police, the STF team had been tracking Pathan, who was recently granted bail and had gone underground again.

He was wanted in a fresh case lodged in the Sambhal district, where he was accused of threatening and attempting to murder witnesses in an ongoing criminal case.

Pathan’s criminal history

Pathan, a resident of Khalapar in Muzaffarnagar, first came to the limelight in 2015 when he allegedly shot dead Asif Zaida at the Muzaffarnagar Railway Station while he was in police custody.

“Following his arrest, Pathan became closely associated with jailed gangsters Sanjeev Jeeva and Mukhtar Ansari during his time in prison. In 2016, he escaped from prison from the Civil Line police station and, acting on the orders of Sanjeev Jeeva, he allegedly shot dead a businessman named Goldie, a blanket trader from Haridwar, in 2017,” the police statement said.

“He also allegedly shot dead Asif Zaida’s father in Kotwali area of Muzaffarnagar, who was a prime witness in his son’s murder case,” said an officer.

The Muzzaffarnagar police had announced a reward of Rs. 50,000, and he was rearrested and sentenced to life imprisonment along with Sanjeev Jeeva in the Goldie murder case. The police said, despite the conviction, Pathan was granted bail in the case, and released within six months of his arrest.

Meanwhile, senior police officers said they would release a detailed statement after further investigation.
