On the sunny Sunday in the week before lasts DLF Masters,Anirban Lahiri had suddenly found it all coming together. The 22-year-old had put behind two early bogeys to weave together a round of six-under 66. Those last-round heroics, however, only propelled him to the runner-up spot,as Gaganjeet Bhullar easily walked away with the big prize. It was just another case of staying just short for the Bangalore boy.
Happily for Lahiri, the elusive last step was just a week and a few hundred kilometres down. Lahiri finally managed to get it all right as he won his first-ever professional title in Panchkula at the Haryana Open this Sunday. Understandably, the first feeling was of relief. It (the title) is a milestone for me. More than elation,or thrill,I just felt a big wave of relief, Lahiri told Sportline,in the city for a day before his departure to Chinese Taipei for the Asian Tours Mercuries Taiwan Masters.
Lahiri had turned professional in 2007 with clear intent, winning the domestic tours qualifying school. And he had done that on the back of a stellar amateur career that had him dominating the national tour, topping all that with a team silver medal at the Doha Asian Games. However, the first entry in the professional wins column had failed to appear for more than two years. The expectations that people have from you,the ones you have from yourself, can put a lot of pressure on you, Lahiri said. That will all ease now.
Lahiris three-under 69 was enough on a day when the leaderboard in Panchkula saw many up-downs. He finally finished with a total of 10-under 278,one ahead of friend C Muniyappa, who himself zoomed up with a 66. It came down to one shot in the end,but when I was lining up my six-inch putt on the last hole,I was so sure of winning that I couldve holed it with my eyes shut, Lahiri said.
