Monsoon’s arrived,three days early

The monsoon arrived in Delhi on Sunday,three days ahead of the scheduled date. Residents woke up to a washed city,as rainfall was recorded in almost all parts of the Capital around 5 am.

The monsoon arrived in Delhi on Sunday,three days ahead of the scheduled date. Residents woke up to a washed city,as rainfall was recorded in almost all parts of the Capital around 5 am.

“We had a meeting in the afternoon,and we can confirm that the monsoon has arrived,” said B P Yadav,Director-Forecast,India Meteorological Department,Delhi.

The rain gauges recorded 72 mm rain at Narela,52 mm at Pitampura,8 mm at Najafgarh,2.4 mm at Safdarjung and 2 mm at Delhi University.

In 2010,monsoon had arrived a week late,on July 5. Delhi had received 772.3 mm of rainfall last year,more than the average of 645.7 mm.

The Met department said a normal monsoon is in store,with Northwest India expected to receive around 97 per cent of the average rainfall.

The showers brought some respite from the heat. The maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 36.3 degrees Celsius,2 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature,too,dipped two notches below normal at 25.9 degrees Celsius.

Officials said the temperatures would drop further on Monday; the expected maximum is around 31 degrees and the minimum around 25 degrees Celsius.

In the National Capital Region,heavy rainfall was recorded at Hindon with 52 mm of rain,followed by 38 mm at Meerut,37 mm at Indirapuram and 33 mm at Rohtak.
