The Mehrauli-Gurgaon road, which connects Delhi and Gurgaon and is lined up with more than 10 malls,is in for a fresh round of strengthening and carpeting.
Although the road falls under the jurisdiction of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA),the PWD has been made responsible for its maintenance. HUDA administrator Praveen Kumar said,During the HUDA board of directors meeting a few months back, the PWD was tasked with re-carpeting the MG road. HUDA has deposited a preliminary amount in PWDs account for the project. The road had reached its age and needs improvement.
The MG road,as it is popularly known, was built nearly 50 years ago,and has been strengthened at regular intervals. It was last strengthened about 11 years ago.
Now,it has one of the highest density of traffic and congestion areas in Gurgaon, with lakhs of cars from Delhi (Mehrauli border) plying on it everyday.
N K Tomar, executive engineer (PWD B&R) said,The road from IFFCO Chowk to Delhi border is used by residents of Gurgaon and Delhi regularly. It will be strengthened and re-carpeted (increase in the layering of the road) again. The main carriageway will be re-designed as per IRC norms and keeping in mind an increase in the density of traffic in the future. The tenders have been received and are being processed in the head office. The project will be started shortly.
The 5.5-km stretch will be resigned to an eight-lane carriageway, with four lanes on either side of the central verge. The cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 21 crore,of which HUDA has provided Rs 6.50 crore.
Sameer,a resident of Heritage city on MG road said,The road has a few potholes and cracks in some corners. The Metro construction has also eroded some areas. Broken and damaged roads lead to traffic bottlenecks, especially during monsoon. Vehicles also get damaged on such roads. Since this is a busy road,it must be strengthened and maintained.
However, some residents expressed concern about re-carpeting,as it will increase the level of the road. They fear that the surrounding areas, which will then be at lower lever, will be easily waterlogged during the monsoon.
Tomar said,Instead of adding another layer to the road, the bituminous layers will be removed and the road will be constructed again.
PWD officials, too, have assured that a proper drainage system would be built to avoid waterlogging or flooding.
