Metro on track to enter Gurgaon next week

The countdown for the Gurgaon metro corridor connecting Qutab Minar to HUDA City Centre has started and the Capital will be connected to Cyber City in a week.

The countdown for the Gurgaon metro corridor connecting Qutab Minar to HUDA City Centre has started and the Capital will be connected to Cyber City in a week. The line, running through several shopping hubs and tourist destinations in South Delhi, will take commuters to the hub of malls in Gurgaon in under 20 minutes.

DMRC sources said the trial runs will be completed by May 31 following which the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is most likely to be invited for inspection between June 1 and 3. The inspection and clearance is expected to be completed within a couple of days after which the line will be commissioned in the first week of June, said a DMRC official.

The Metro corridor will, however,be connected from Qutab Minar to Central Secretariat only by mid-July as track laying and other works are now being finished, officials said. Signalling and trial runs of trains on the stretch will begin next month.

The new line has generated enthusiasm as it will make commuting to the Cyber City quicker and hassle-free. “The best part is that we will not be dependent on cramped buses to go the shopping malls in Gurgaon and will not waste an entire day for it,” said an elated Gurmeet Kaur,a second-year student of Delhi University.

“It is good that the Metro will be opened for the public this time of the year. Schools and colleges are closed and we can expect a huge rush of students who otherwise find it difficult to commute such long distances,” said Jagdish Sharma, who runs a garment store in Sahara Mall.

Meanwhile, work on Chhattarpur station on the Qutub Minar-Gurgaon stretch is being completed with pre-fabricated structures due to time constraints, officials said. The station had run into trouble with land acquisition and since the land transfer was delayed,Metro officials used special technology to complete the station on time. “It will not affect the trial runs as the viaducts and tracks are ready. The work will be completed by late July or early August. A station takes 18 months for construction whereas this one is being completed in eight months. There will be no halt at the station till the work is completed,” he added.

The line will be opened with as many as eight trains. Though the frequency of trains is yet to be finalised,DMRC is aiming at a three-minute frequency when it finally deploys 60 trains on the line.
