Metro chief stable after bypass surgery

A day after undergoing cardiac bypass surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital,Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E Sreedharan’s condition remained stable on Friday.

A day after undergoing cardiac bypass surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital,Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan’s condition remained stable on Friday. According to doctors at the hospital,he will be discharged within the next week.

Doctors in the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department said Sreedharan had regained consciousness. “We have kept him in the Intensive Care Unit as of now but his condition is stable. We will review his condition and discharge him before April 15,” said Dr Ganesh Mani, who conducted the surgery.

The 78-year-old underwent a beating heart surgery on Thursday at the Apollo Hospital. Unlike the traditional bypass surgery, where heartbeat is stopped and the patient is put on a heart-lung machine during the operation, during the beating heart bypass surgery, the doctor uses a surgical tool to stabilise a small part of the heart and holds it still while he sews healthy blood vessels in place.

Sreedharan had suffered a heart attack at the Delhi airport on Wednesday. He was rushed to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

The DMRC has appointed Satish Kumar,Director (Electrical),to look after routine work till Sreedharan rejoins.
