A group of drunken men allegedly molested and attempted to kidnap two female students and physically assaulted a male student at JNU late on Tuesday night, prompting the university administration to announce new security measures, including ban on entry of outside vehicles on the campus between 10 pm and 6 am.

One of the accused, identified as Abhishek from Gurgaon, has been arrested after an FIR on charges of molestation and kidnapping attempt was lodged with the police. Search is on for three of his accomplices who have been identified, said police.

According to the Delhi Police, two women were walking inside the campus around 11 pm when 4-5 men in a car approached them. Police said the accused were drunk and molested the women. They even grabbed the women and tried to pull them inside the car. The women screamed and managed to free themselves, said the police.

An hour later, when another student, who is pursuing Ph D at the university, objected to the accused opening the college gates while trying to exit the campus, the latter thrashed him. The incident took place near the North Gates of the campus.

“The student was slapped by the accused. This student also alleged the men were drunk; they pushed him and fled,” said an

officer.

The first call was made to the police around 12.30 am by the male student who complained of physical assault. The second call was made by the college administration and the women around 1 am.

“Two complaints, one regarding physical assault and another regarding molestation and attempt to kidnap, have been received from JNU students. Two cases have been registered. In both the cases, the accused and vehicle are the same and have been identified. Further investigation is on,” said DCP (Southwest) Manoj C.

Police also blamed the college authorities and guards for allowing the accused to enter the college campus at night.

“They had only noted down the name of one person and car number. They didn’t stop the men (from entering the premises). They should have…the accused aren’t JNU students or even students from Delhi,” said an officer.

The officer said the stretch which the car took had no CCTVs. “We found that the accused were seen roaming around the college multiple times on the day of the incident. They weren’t stopped a single time,” added the officer.

Meanwhile, the university administration, in its notice issued on Wednesday, said that entry of outside vehicles will be restricted on campus from 10 pm to 6 am. Residents of JNU campus will now be required to show their identity cards upon entry.

“The competent authority has taken a serious view of the recent incidents where outsiders entered the JNU campus and created law and order problems during the night hours,” the university said in a notice. Additionally, the students have been advised to inform the personnel at the main gate in case they are expecting guests.

One of the students who was attacked underwent a medical examination and has formally filed a complaint, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) said in a statement. JNU’s ABVP unit has also called a protest regarding alleged lapse in security.
