After facing opposition from a section of Vasant Kunj residents, the Lieutenant Governor’s office on Friday cleared a project to widen the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road.

The Public Works Department said some modifications have been made in the original plan and work will begin after they get clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

PWD will carry out widening of the road from Andheria More to Masoodpur. The road, between 16 and 30 metres in width, will be widened to 75 metres, thereby allowing for eight lanes.

“Modifications made in the original plan include lessening the central verge width and having more footpath space. Dedicated cycle lanes will also be created on the stretch,’’ a PWD official said.

Residents in favour of the project said they hoped work would begin soon so that all the digging was completed before the monsoon. They said the project was essential for the decongestion of Vasant Kunj and would provide an alternative route to Gurgaon and the airport.

Residents welfare association of Sector D,Pocket-2 had moved court against widening of the road claiming it violated their right over the land and could compromise their safety. The petition also stated that the widening work would destroy 1,000 trees.
