The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday warned that it would terminate the services of its domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) if they fail to return to work in a day.
This action, officials admitted, might lead to a temporary manpower crunch as the process of appointing new DBCs may take at least a week.
We can terminate the services of DBCs as they are contract workers. We are appealing to them not to stop work at a time when the city is facing a dengue outbreak. We can easily appoint new DBCs as we have a long waiting list of applicants, said Subhash Arya,Leader of MCD House.
According to Public Health Committee chairman V K Monga, more than 50 per cent of 3,200 DBCs are off work. We will wait for another day to allow them to return to work before taking a decision on terminating their services, he said.
Anti-Malaria Karamchari Sangh president Ashok Chaudhary said the DBCs will continue their strike, pointing to several court rulings in the favour of regularisation.
The DBCs have been demanding regularisation for long. The MCD,however, claims it does not have the required funds at present to regularise them.
Later in the evening,Monga claimed the strike had been called off by the DBCs. Chaudhary remained unavailable for comment.
