The Aam Aadmi Party-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Thursday regularised 120 sanitation workers and 270 nala beldars (sewage cleaners) who were appointed on contract basis. This is the second phase of regularisation being carried out since the AAP started its MCD tenure, while 370 sanitation workers were regularised in the first phase.

During the MCD polls, the AAP had guaranteed that contractual workers will be made permanent in due course along with regular pay.

According to officials, the MCD has over 18,000 sanitation workers on a contractual basis out of which 760 workers have been regularised so far. “The ruling AAP in the MCD will now continue to regularise the remaining employees,” the AAP said in its statement.

According to the AAP, this is the first time that ‘nala beldars’ of the erstwhile North and East Delhi Municipal Corporation are being regularised.

“Nala beldars have no union and they have no voice in MCD. But their voices have been heard by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The process of regularising them is being completed today,” said Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj while handing over the certificates to the newly regularised workers.

However, BJP’s leader of Opposition at the MCD, Raja Iqbal Singh claimed that since the AAP government came to power, the process of regularising the employees has slowed down significantly. “Only a few employees have been regularised, while the fate of the most remain in a limbo,” he told reporters.
