A person was shot at as he tried to stop four bike-borne assailants from snatching a chain from a woman in Noida Sector 26 on Thursday afternoon.
Senior police officers said Digambar Singh (22) received a bullet wound to his hip,but has been declared out out of danger by doctors at the hospital,where he is recovering.
Officers said that the incident took place at around 1.30 pm outside N S public School.
A woman teacher was reportedly waiting to take an autorickshaw home. Four assailants on two motorcycles approached her,with one falling a few paces behind the other. One person got off and tried to snatch the teachers necklace. When she raised the alarm,he tried to flee, an officer said.
Police said Digambar,a driver,was also present at the spot,heard the womans cries for help.
He ran and caught hold of the man who had tried to snatch the chain. One of the men on the motorbike that had stayed behind took out a pistol and shot him. In the chaos that followed,all four escaped, a senior officer said.
Singh was initially taken to the nearby Apollo Hospital,and later referred to Kailash Hospital,where he was declared out of danger.
An officer said,A case has been registered under appropriate Sections of the Indian Penal Code and further investigations are underway.
