A 26-year-old man was hit by a car and then dragged for up to 250 metres in a late night accident in South Delhis Safdarjung Enclave on Friday.
Police said the four occupants of the car were inebriated and its driver was speeding. Around 9.30 pm on Jhandu Singh Marg in Safdarjung Enclave,the car hit Sohan Singh who was crossing the road with his cousin Narender. Police said the two were returning from AIIMS where they had gone to check on a relative.
Narender told the police the speeding car hit Sohan and he got stuck under its rear wheels. Sohan was dragged for several metres. When I rushed to him,he was unconscious and the car occupants had fled from the spot leaving the car behind, said Narender.
Sohan was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre,where he died today morning. He is survived by his wife,a two-year-old daughter and a six-month old son. Police said he was a native of Uttarakhand and was working as a waiter at Hotel Africa Avenue.
Police later seized the car but found no alcohol bottles inside. The car bore a sticker of Ministry of Defence,the police said.
Police identified the car driver as Peter,aged 22. A resident of Naraina village,police said Peter had borrowed the car from one Brijesh Tanwar,who gives cars on rent in Delhi Cantonment.
The four were on way to meet an friend and were speeding. Peter said he did not see Sohan crossing the road, said a senior police officer.
Police identified Peters friends as Vicky,Munger and Rajesh.
While Peter was arrested on Saturday evening,the police are looking for the rest. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Safdarjung police station.
