The Delhi Police has arrested a man for his alleged involvement in grabbing unattended properties in the Capital through forged documents. The owners of the properties were residing either in other cities or abroad. The arrested has been identified as Surender Gahlot,a resident of Mitraon village here.
The police said that Gahlot had been indulging in the crime with the aid of another person, identified as Satender Singh, who is absconding.
K K Vyas,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing),said the arrest came following investigations into a complaint filed by one Ritu Tibarewal, who stated that her 1,000 sq yard plot in West Delhis Mundka area, worth a few crores of rupees, had been grabbed by someone using forged documents.
She had purchased the land in 1987 and, after her marriage, settled in Kolkata. As the plot was lying vacant,a caretaker,Binod Kumar, had been deputed to keep an eye on it.
During one of his visits, she noticed that some people were raising a boundary wall at the plot. Tibarewal, through her caretaker, found out that the property was now showing as sold to Gahlot, Vyas said.
The documents showed that Tibarewal had executed a general power of attorney to Murti Devi in 2000. In 2001,Devi then executed the power of attorney in favour of Singh. Singh then executed a sale deed in favour of Gahlot in 2007, he added. The police further discovered that the signatures of the complainant and the witnesses were forged.
It also came to light that Devi had died on July 18,2007,three months before the sales deed was executed. The police said that Devi was an illiterate housewife, who used thumb impressions to validate documents instead of a signature. Satender Singh was previously involved in many criminal cases, including murder, possession of illegal arms, extortion and forgery.
